Check out our Instagram post regarding how to build a survival shelter!

When you find yourself in the wild, one of the first things you need is shelter. A well-constructed shelter not only shields you from harsh weather but also provides a psychological sense of safety. Here are key tips for building a survival shelter:

  1. Location Selection: Look for a spot with natural windbreaks like rocks or trees and avoid low-lying areas where water may collect.

  2. Framework and Insulation: Use sturdy branches for the frame and layer it with leaves, moss, or grass for insulation. This keeps warmth in and cold out.

  3. Types of Shelters: Familiarize yourself with a few simple designs, like the lean-to, A-frame, and debris hut. Each type offers varying levels of protection depending on the conditions.

  4. Waterproofing: Cover your shelter with large leaves or pine boughs to keep moisture out, and build on a slight incline to help rainwater flow away.

  5. Ventilation: Ensure there’s enough airflow to prevent condensation build-up, which can dampen the inside and make staying warm difficult.

Learning basic shelter-building skills is crucial if you want to be prepared for outdoor adventures or emergencies. Having this knowledge could be the difference between a cold, sleepless night and a safe, restful one.
